Mainframe Hybrid Computing Becomes a Reality with IBM zEnterprise System (September 2011) |
|
|
A little over one year ago, IBM announced a revolutionary approach to enterprise computing that was designed from the ground up to provide organizations with a new and innovative way for deploying and managing heterogeneous platform environments. The IBM zEnterprise System introduces the first true hybrid computing technology infrastructure aimed at optimizing the deployment of workloads, by utilizing best-fit technologies and operating system environments in a highly secure, highly scalable, and highly available configuration. This unique hybrid system provides organizations with the infrastructure necessary to deploy enterprise private clouds that are ready for mission-critical applications, and establishes a common management and monitoring infrastructure for both the mainframe and distributed systems.

zEnterprise integrates System z, Power, x86 and workload-specific optimizers and accelerators in a single “system of systems,” making it the ideal platform for running mission-critical workloads and multi-tier applications. The unique combination of hardware architectures and operating systems provides organizations with an opportunity to homogenize data-serving practices and business analytics, allowing them to take actionable insight that is based on real-time data versus data that can become stale while it waits for the next refresh off-platform.
zEnterprise provides a foundation for matching the characteristics of workloads to the right hardware platform, offering a best-fit solution while delivering the ability to integrate, monitor and manage heterogeneous infrastructure resources as a single, logical, virtualized system. |
The IBM zEnterprise System is made up of three components that work together to bring you revolutionary best-in-class systems and software technologies.
The zEnterprise 196 and 114 are next-generation enterprise servers targeted and built for organizations of all sizes. They provide greater flexibility and granularity with improved price-performance over the previous generation of z10 EC and z10 BC servers, respectively. They are the ideal platforms for mission-critical applications and large-scale data and transaction-serving environments. They are also the most efficient platforms for large-scale Linux server consolidations, due to their state-of-the-art virtualization capabilities and large portfolio of z/OS and Linux on System z applications. Starting at 26 MIPS (million instructions per second) with the z114 and scaling to over 50 BIPS (billion instructions per second) with the z196, IBM has introduced a mainframe for everyone, allowing the freedom to choose a solution that can be sized to fit any needs. Additional supported operating environments include z/VM, z/VSE, and z/TPF.
The zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) is a new System z infrastructure built to house high-performance optimizers and general-purpose blades. This unique hybrid design integrates mainframe, POWER7 and IBM x86 technologies in a single unified system, allowing simplified operations across all these application environments. Connectivity between environments is through a dedicated 10Gbps high-performance private network that delivers greater network security and reduced latency while eliminating network hops and external firewalls. Supported operating environments include AIX, Linux on IBM System x, and Microsoft Windows.
The zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager (zManager) is the revolutionary piece of this solution that unifies the management of resources, allows the extension of System z governance and qualities of service across the infrastructure, and simplifies and reduces the range of skills necessary for managing the datacenter. This new architectural component is responsible for the integration, monitoring and management of the heterogeneous infrastructure resources. It delivers the hypervisors as firmware instead of software, and provides for the dynamic deployment and management of virtual server images and appliances in a service-optimized infrastructure. Its end-to-end management capabilities provide IT with ‘workload awareness,’ allowing for performance-based resource management in accordance with specified business service-level objectives and ensuring appropriate capital expenditures; you buy only the resources you need based on insights into the alignment of your workload characteristics. |
| The zEnterprise System is truly an integrated “hybrid-computing, workload-optimizable” system of systems that unifies your business' IT infrastructure to deliver predictable service delivery, improved workload performance and reliability at a lower operational cost than today’s disparate heterogeneous environments. |
