IBM SmartCloud Entry for Power Systems: Your Ticket to the ‘Cloud Journey’ (December 2011) Print
IBM provides a proven, powerful way to get into the cloud

Cloud computing is a topic that seems to be on every IT person’s lips these days, and that trend will very likely continue in the future. That said, many IT professionals are still asking themselves: What exactly is cloud computing? How can it benefit my unique environment? And how do I need to plan for it?

There are several key components that make up a cloud-enabled infrastructure. Virtualization is really the foundation; a virtualized server and storage environment is the first building block on the PVC (Physical to Virtual to Cloud) journey. You should be able to take advantage of resource-pooling with rapid elasticity. Power Systems is an ideal platform choice for cloud, and many Power Systems clients have already embraced this functionality by leveraging the advanced virtualization capabilities of IBM PowerVM and Capacity on Demand technologies. Fundamentally, a cloud infrastructure should also be based on standardization, automation and self-service. You will also need broad network access, a management console for monitoring, and some way to measure/meter for billing or chargeback.

If you are a Power Systems client and want to make an initial move into a private cloud infrastructure, the IBM SmartCloud Entry solution provided by IBM Starter Kit for Cloud on Power Systems is a great option. This exciting new product is relatively inexpensive, simple to implement, and easy to manage. Starter Kit is built on IBM Systems Director and VMControl, and provides a self-service portal for workload provisioning; virtualized VM image creation, deployment and management; administrative controls; and some basic metering functionality for chargeback. It doesn’t have all of the advanced capability of IBM’s CloudBurst, ISDM (IBM Service Delivery Manager) or TSAM (Tivoli Service Automation Manager) offerings, but it is a great way to get started on your cloud journey. The primary Management Node only runs on AIX but you will be able to run AIX, Linux and IBM i (per IBM’s statement of direction for the next release of Starter Kit) in the secondary Compute Nodes. Starter Kit is inherently flexible and scalable, and there is also an upgrade path from SmartCloud Entry to IBM’s Advanced Cloud solutions so you have long-term investment protection.  svccloud.jpg
