#9: IBM System p achieves the top benchmark results for the SAP TRBK (Transaction Banking) standard. The benchmark has a dual transaction set: one of online transactions to simulate day time transaction processing, executed through a group of simulated users; the second via a set of batch account balancing transactions that simulate night time processing providing a proof point in the high transactional banking market. It is the only SAP benchmark result that directly compares POWER/AIX to a current Sun Solaris 10 platform as Sun has not published results using the traditional SD workloads. IBM surpasses Sun with 4 times fewer database cores. And, the IBM result is 87% better for day processing and 73% better for night processing than the result achieved by HP. This highlights the POWER6 processor as a high transactional throughput technology, providing better processing capacity from a system with a smaller footprint and energy consumption and highlights the DS8300 & DS4800 for the high I/O demands of a transactional banking workload. IBM's new POWER6 processor-based UNIX server has posted world records in key metrics of computing performance vital to a broad range of technical and commercial applications. These leadership results were obtained on 1-core, 4-core, 8-core, and 16-core servers running either Linux or the IBM UNIX operating system, AIX, allowing customers substantial flexibility. » Press Release

#1: Computerworld: IBM goes from Big Blue to Very Green. IBM is cutting power use by consolidating datacenters with Linux mainframes. IBM is drinking its own green Kool-Aid, embarking on a huge energy-conservation project to consolidate about 3,900 of its own servers to 30 IBM System z9 mainframes running Linux and virtualization software. The result will be reduced power usage by about 80% and $250 million in savings on electricity, support and software over five years. The move will cut floor space needed to house the machines by 85% and will conserve enough electrical power to run a small town, the company said. IBM now has more than 8 million square feet of data center space -- the size of about 139 football fields --supporting more than 350,000 users. » Article
